I work on all kinds of projects, including those from outside the UK where translation into English has not been done by a native English speaker. It is often the phrasing and language of otherwise well constructed websites that let them down and project an unprofessional image to potential clients. My proofreading service, especially in cases like this, could prove a worthwhile investment.
To begin with I need a brief description of the content, form, medium, length, likely deadline and how the project is to be returned. From overseas this would be via email but could equally be by email from within the UK.
If your text has already been copy edited and therefore a straightforward proofreading service only is required, I will quote based on the number of words and type of project. The sort of text, its complexity and how much work is required will have a bearing on the total cost as the time taken can vary considerably.
A particularly complex text can, despite containing relatively few words or figures, take more time to read to a high standard than a longer but more straightforward one. This is why I ideally require a representative sample of the project. I can then give an informed indication of realistic deadlines and cost before making an agreement.
After first contact and together with the sample a house style sheet would be useful. This would be as used by the copy-editor if there is one and include a list of names, technical or non-English words and any special instructions on how you want the text to be marked in addition to BS standard. If the work is to be done electronically then Track Changes will be used.
For prospective authors who would like their copy checked prior to submission to publishers and who do not have a style sheet I can supply a form to be completed. This can reduce queries, therefore saving time and money.
Whilst checking factual content is not within the proofreading remit should I spot anything that is glaringly wrong (as I have in the past) I will query it.
